Twitterature - October 2013

I have been in a manic reading frenzy lately. It's been one of those "carry my book everywhere and prop it up so I can read while I'm brushing my teeth and washing dishes and cooking dinner and folding laundry" kind of reading stretches.  I've just found so, so many good books lately that it's been hard to stop. Some might say that I'm "avoiding housework" or "avoiding real life" or whatever when I walk around with my nose in a book and my attention firmly divided between the real world and my book-life, but I prefer to think of it as multi-living, which is just like multi-tasking except you are living your real life plus living in your book.   It's really a two birds, one stone kind of deal.

Or maybe I really do need to put the books down for a minute now and then.

Either way, I definitely found some winners this month, and here they are, in 140 characters or less.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - It made me laugh, it made me cry. Cancer kids find each other and a book they love. They meet the author. Nothing works out in the end.

The Girl You Left Behind by JoJo Moyes - Two women, one painting. WWI meets present day. Haunting. Beautiful. #FreelyGivenNotTaken #OneOfMyTop5BooksOfTheYear

The Husband's Secret by Lianne Moriarty - "To be opened in the event of my death" but the wife opens it now. Three women, one intertwined story.  Fabulous and unexpected.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett - I'm the last woman in America to read this book. Complicated times, complicated relationships.  Wonderful story. #YouIsImportant

Those are the books that have been keeping me entertained this month.  I don't have anything picked out to read next  (GASP!  It makes me feel all panicky when I don't have something lined up), so I hope you can help me out.

What are you reading right now that will be my next "can't put down" book?

  1. I enjoyed Me Before You and have been thinking about the author's other works. Top 5 of the year? Wow, that's saying something!

I listened to the first half of The Husband's Secret on a road trip and haven't picked it back up. Good to know you think it's worth finishing.

And hurray for manic reading frenzies! I get that. :)

    1. I would recommend finishing The Husband's Secret - the final chapter made me mad, though. Fair warning ;) And yes, The Girl You Left Behind was THAT good. I finished it a couple weeks ago and I still can't stop thinking about it.

  2. Loved The Help.

The Moriarty and Moyes books sound wonderful.

I just started Jeannette Walls' first work of fiction - The Silver Star and so far, it's good. I loved loved loved The Glass Castle and am seeing some common elements, even though the latter was memoir.

Also started listening to The Rules of Civility on audio, but I can't say yet what I think about it. I've read good things and not-so-good things about it, so I don't know quite what to expect.

    1. I really liked The Glass Castle too. I'm pretty sure I downloaded The Silver Star onto my nook a while back, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I'll be curious to see what you think about it.

  3. The Help is a great book -- no matter when you read it!

I've heard so much about The Fault in Our Stars lately that I'll have to get it soon.

    1. If you pick up The Fault In Our Stars, get your box of tissues ready. It's so, so sad but wonderful at the same time.

  4. Oh wow! So glad to have found you via Twitterature. I think we are reading twins! I loved Fault in the Stars and the Help and have the other two on my to be read list! I totally understand why you've been reading in such a frenzied state with that group of books. How about Me Before You (also by JoJo Moyes), Reconstructing Amelia or Eleanor and Park? Just a few that I have loved lately...

    1. Thanks for the suggestions! We do seem to be reading twins, don't we? I LOVED Me Before You (well, loved and didn't love - you know what I mean, right?). I read the first couple chapters of Reconstructing Amelia but put it off for something else so I think you're right - I need to finish it. And Eleanor and Park sounds fabulous. I'm putting it on the top of my list right now. I'll be looking at Twitterature next month to see if you read The Girl You Left Behind. Seriously, it was one of my favorites so far this year!

  5. The Fault in Our Stars is showing up everywhere; guess it's about time I get around to it!

Also, I am a huge fan of the multi-living idea. It's like having a Second Life for your Second Life character (which I realize is only funny if you're a fan of The Office...).

    1. Oh yes! Second Life for my Second Life character! Makes perfect sense. And the Fault in Our Stars was fabulous - but bring tissues. So, so sad.

  6. Lool! Multi-living?! I love the sound of that! Amen to The Fault In Our Stars

    1. Yes! The Fault in Our Stars keeps popping into my mind at weird times. That's the mark of a really good book - one that sticks with you.

  7. I loved The Fault in Our Stars, and The Help! I still have to read that Moyes book. I'm reading her other one, The Last Letter From Your Lover.

    1. I have The Last Letter From Your Lover downloaded. I'm saving it for when I need a REALLY good book - at least I hope it's good! I'll be anxious to hear what you think. I've loved her others so much I hope this one can stand up to them.

  8. I just finished The Husband's Secret, too. At times I didn't think I was going to finish it, but I ended up really enjoying it. And I love so much of what Lianne Moriarty writes about relationships. It's like she's in my head. It was like that in What Alice Forgot, too. Did you read that one?

    1. I haven't read that one yet! It looks fabulous though. I definitely think she's got a handle on how real people are in relationships.

  9. The Husband's Secret is turning up a lot on my must read feed lately. I think I need to get on that. I'm behind in reading. And by behind I mean that I read very, very little. It's shameful.

    1. It really was a lovely book. I go through manic spurts of reading, followed by reading one book very slowly for a month... but I always have to be reading something. It's a blessing and a curse, really.
