Happy Fall. Or not.

Mama’s Losin’ It

Happy Fall!  The first day of fall was September 22, share something fall related you did!

Here's a bitter truth.

I don't really love fall.

When pumpkin spice EVERYTHING starts showing up in my Pinterest feed, I start to twitch.   When Facebook turns to talk of trips to the pumpkin patch and the first blessed Pumpkin Spice latte of the season, I cringe.

Now before you start hurling rotten jack-o-lantern guts at me, at least TRY to let me explain.

It's not fall itself so much that I dislike, but to me it's just a big pre-winter, and winter?  Now THAT I really despise.

Winter means cold feet and chapped lips and no sun and the inability to go outside where there is SUNSHINE and snow and dreary and soul-crushingly short days with no sunshine.  Did I mention there isn't enough sunshine to suit me in the winter time?

Anyway, fall can certainly be lovely at times, with all the brisk weather and the beautiful colors and the return of jeans and hoodies and whatnot, but for me it's just a signal of things to come, and by "things" I mean "snow" and ain't nobody got time for that.  Oh, plus every fall my neighbors start to hate me so that's always fun.

But even though fall isn't my favorite (give me a good spring or summer any day) I do soldier on and try to make it somewhat enjoyable for the boys.  We do the pumpkin patch business every year, and each year I try to outdo myself while carving jack-o-lanterns .   So far this year all I've managed is to take the boys to the Fall Festival at Zachary's school and to order Halloween costumes - Buzz Lightyear for Cooper and quite inexplicably a werewolf for Zack, in case you wondered.

We will get the rest of it done, though.  We will do the frolicking in the leaves, and the hot apple cider, and the roasting marshmallows for the last s'mores of the year.

Then I will go into hibernation and not come out until spring, because spring is a season I can really get behind.

  1. I love fall, but I definitely think there is a sense of foreboding about it, knowing that snow and cold and all the yuck of winter is just around the corner.

Where did you find the werewolf costume? I think my son would like that one.

    1. Shana, I ordered the werewolf costume from PartyCity.com. It's this one. http://www.partycity.com/product/boys+werewolf+costume.do?from=Search&navSet=werewolf&bypass_redirect=1

I don't usually pay that much for Halloween costumes but my 7 year old was just in love with it.

  2. I like Fall because it's such a nice change after the living in Satan's armpit of Summer. But the pumpkin obsessiveness annoys me for some reason. Probably because you can make most of those recipes with canned pumpkin year round and what people are really excited about is pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks. Which is fine, but can we just be honest with ourselves?

    1. Here's another true confession - I LOVE coffee with all my being, but I don't really like Starbucks. I think I probably need to go into hiding now. Bye.

  3. I really never think much about winter during Fall, just because fall is actually my favorite season, along with Spring. Winter's are far too cold, and Summer's are way too hot where I live. Sounds like, in spite of not liking Fall, you still find the time to enjoy the cool, crisp, colorful day with your kids. They don't have to know that you really do hate pumpkins!

    1. I am a master at hiding how I feel about most "festivities" from my kids ;) They think Mama is having a grand time, too.

  4. I am so with you. Fall is like one big bossy friend who forces me to do things I don't want to do. Like pick apples and sit around a fire when it's cold outside. What?

    1. Well that part sounds pretty good. If only it would stay that way... Sigh.

  5. I've noticed that people either love autumn with a fiery passion (me!) or don't like it very much at all. I hope the rest of the season is kind to you.

  6. I never considered people might not like Fall for this reason, but I bet there are more of you! Our winters are so mild...meaning some years we don't get snow at all, and when we DO get snow it only stays for MAYBE a week if we're lucky. Yes lucky! We still get excited for the white stuff because it rarely over stays its welcome. I feel sorry for you snowed in folk! I'd buy you a pumpkin spice latte for your trouble, but since they make you miserable FORGET IT! ;)

    1. Well I'm certainly not a poster child of mental health, but I'm sure I'm not alone, right? Right? Fall is so... foreboding. Plus, most of the bad things that have happened to me have happened in the fall, so there's that.
