This boy...

Mama’s Losin’ It

Something that made you smile this last week.(Close enough, right?)

I try not to be one of those moms... you know the ones.  The ones who think little Johnny is the smartest/brightest/cutest/bestest kid in the whole darn world and who think that YOU need to think that too.

But here's the truth:  My boys whine.  They smell weird sometimes (ok, a lot of the time).  They don't always follow directions on the first (or second, or third, or fourth) time they are asked.  They're messy.  Neither one has one single iota of musical ability.  Zack has weird ugly feet and Cooper will probably be bald before he's 25.

And until about a year or so ago, I would have said that Zachary was the clumsiest kid in the entire world.

But then something happened that changed all that.

The changes have been gradual - so gradual in fact that I'm not sure I realized just how far he has come until this week.

This past week R took him to a practice session where he got to put a lot of his knowledge and skills to the test.  I usually try to go to all these special things, but this time I stayed home since I'm still having some eye issues and I just wanted to rest.

R texted me a video of Zachary doing his board breaking routine, and to be honest, I watched it, then watched again and again before I really understood that this confident, graceful, athletic kid was MY kid.

I've watched this video over and over, and over again, and every time it makes me smile.

That's MY kid.  And he's awesome.

What made you smile this week?

  3. That is so awesome! I've enrolled my kids in martial arts since the fall and have been really impressed with the effect it has had on them.

  4. I simply love everything about this (as a parent of a stinky boy who I have my insecurities about sometimes!).

  8. A year ago he would have fallen right over. Seriously. He's come a long way.

  9. It has really been one of my better decisions as a parent, if I do say so myself. Just the respect and discipline that they teach there has been a wonderful - and much needed - backup to what we teach at home.

  10. Thank you so much! I love my stinky boys to pieces no matter what, but it's so amazing to see him make such progress in something.

  11. Thank you! When he first started I wasn't sure it was really going to be his thing. Now he LOVES it, and it shows.

  12. It's kind of scary to think that at eight, he could probably kick my butt. I mean, he won't, but he probably could...

  13. Aw, yay Zachary!! That's how I feel when my usually less-than-graceful daughter shines in her gymnastics class!

  14. It's amazing to watch when they find something that they really get, isn't it?

  15. My son did this when he was little too. It was soooooo good for him in terms of discipline, confidence and responsibility. It was stunned by the cost, but he did it all the way to 2nd level black belt. Looking back I think it was money well spent.

  17. It is expensive for us too, but I can already see the benefits of it for him. As long as he wants to continue, we will scrape the money together. I love the philosophy of the place he goes. They say " The kids think they are coming here to learn how to kick and punch, but really we are teaching them to be better people." It's hard to beat that. I'm glad to hear that even years later you see the benefits from it for your son, too.
